This question is for both candidates--is it important in a city with a strong, vibrant gay population such as Atlanta to have a LGBT representative on the City Council? Can those constituents be represented as effectively by an entirely heterosexual City Council?
1. Mr. Wan, your web site cites cutting taxes, making government more efficient, and improving public safety as your top three campaign priorities. You boast the support of Libertarian Candidate Tad Christian, the Atlanta Commercial Board of Realtors, The Buckhead Coalition, and the Log Cabin Republicans. I think it's fair to say that given your support, cutting taxes will be high on your list of priorities.
If so, can you tell me what specific city services you plan to cut to pay for improvements in public safety? If you believe that waste is the biggest problem, what specific area of city services is wasting the most money and requires the deepest cuts?
2. You recently publicly opposed a proposed politically unpopular zoning change to the corner of 10th and Monroe that some felt was necessary to the success of the Atlanta Beltline project. Given that the Beltline project is going to require some tough decisions and that many changes that are necessary for the good of the entire city are likely to be opposed by the few residents who live closest to where the change takes place, what is your long term plan for getting the Beltline developed?
Specifically what types of zoning changes are acceptable and what level of community displeasure is necessary to derail it? What are you guidelines for tabling debate and moving to a decision on a proposed change?
